My last Star Wars post
I promise, this will be my last post on this subject (I hope I haven't promised that before......).
I was reading Entertainment Weekly, and since most of the writers there seem to be big Star Wars fans (although much more mentally stable then "fanboys"), and they had quite a funny little sidebar article about the 5 largest continuity problems between Revenge of the Sith, and A New Hope. Really a funny article, because it pointed out some things that I didn't think about between the two.
The time between Revenge of the Sith, and A New Hope, is supposed to be about twenty years, however Obi Wan Kenobi ages from Ewan McGregor to Alex Guiness, about 50 years between them. The article suggested moisturizer might have countered the desert heat (since Obi Wan was chilling in the desert of Tatooine) that so ravaged his skin.
Also concerning Obi Wan, when Luke and him are talking in A New Hope, about how R2-D2 has been seeking him out saying that the droid was his property, Obi Wan says, "No, I can't recall ever owning a droid." But Episodes 2 and 3, R2-D2 and Obi Wan spend practically all their time together. Was the desert heat also effecting his memory.
Those were from the article, but I have been watching the DVD of A New Hope, and now I have a couple observations. I was vaguely disappointed that the DVD commentary of George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt, and Dennis Muren was not what I expected. They aren't together, interacting, they recorded their commentaries separately, and then it was spliced together. One of the things I like about commentaries is hearing how they talk to each other when they aren't in character. I guess that is why I like the DVD's of Red Dwarf so much.
The last thing, among George Lucas' vast amount of talking (at least 75% of the commentary is him talking about how A New Hope was mostly mythological figures set in a distant future type setting) was that Darth Vader didn't actually kill Obi Wan Kenobi. Obi Wan, made a choice right before Vader swings the lightsaber to "surrender himself to the force". How are we supposed to have figured that out? I spent 20 years of my life thinking that he was killed but just evaporated or something, I guess it explains why Vader sticks a boot out and nudges Obi Wan's cloak in confusion......but that is a big leap to make.
